Personally, I recommend Malware Bytes over Spybot. I'm a freelance writer, and apparently, I'm procrastinating.hard. But the free Malwarebytes is still holding down its niche.Įr.I didn't mean to type this much or for this to sound like an ad. Seems that almost none of it is still good because the antivirus software, even the free stuff, has caught up. I found this thread while looking to see if people still thought some of the antispyware stuff I used in the past was still viable (Spybot, SUPERAntiSpyware, etc). Or, if you have an issue and Avast doesn't seem to be helping, run Malwarebytes to see what it can see.Īlso, it has a free browser guard addon that's actually decent for detecting phishing sites and killing some ads. So, it's kinda like something you keep around just in case, but it's not a full antivirus program (unless you pay for the full version, but it's not the best) - You can let Avast do its thing. It just exists happily along with whatever's doing the heavy lifting. It can work well with your Avast because it doesn't try to kill or take over any of the antivirus program's features (which some programs do). It's also good in situations where the antivirus program becomes compromised by malware (won't open, won't update, won't scan, etc.) - you can run something like Malwarebytes to free it up. It's good for on-demand scans that can often find some malware your antivirus missed. I know this is months later, but if you're still out there and care to know - yes, Malwarebytes (free edition) runs well as a kind of adjunct to a more dedicated antivirus program.
